These break down into similar sub-categories to the nodder kokeshi;

1. Traditional (Dento) kokeshi - are divided into 11 regions, with a few sub categories; Hijiori, Kijiyama, Nanbu, Narugo, Sakunami, Togatta, Tsuchiyo, Tsugaru, Yajiro, Yamagata and Zao.

2. Traditional (Dento) Ejiko and Nemariko - a few of the regions extended their range of traditional shapes to include Ejiko, which represent a baby in a basket as traditionally used by women in the rice fields, and Nemariko, pear or bell shaped kokeshi that appear to be sitting down in their kimonos.

3. Creative (Sosako) family kokeshi - grandpa & grandma pair.

4. Hina kokeshi - minimalistic hina pair.

5. Character kokeshi - Ainu pair, Mai dancer.

6. Festival and practical kokeshi - Tanabata festival kokeshi and Maiko lamp.

7. Art kokeshi - Aoki Ryoka daisy and 1960s trio.

8. Daruma - wooden Daruma dolls are also classed as kokeshi. Daruma (Bodhidharma) was a Buddhist monk who lived in the 5th or 6th century A.D. and is credited as the founder of Zen Buddhism.
